Minerals from the Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) has been a prolific producer of excellent specimens of malachite and chrysocolla for many years now, with some exceptionally large specimens (several feet across) making their way into many private collections and museums. The specimens are very attractive, containing shades of vivid greens and blues. Below you will find a selection of specimens in various sizes and price ranges.

#CONGO 09 - Malachite on matrix - Democratic Republic of Congo

12 x 12 x 2 cm (4.7 x 4.7 x 0.8 inches) - $40.00

Nice cabinet hand-sized specimen of malachite with a little exposed matrix.  This specimen is your more typical, "classic" malachite specimen with good green color but not so much in the way of relief to the specimen.  The contrast of malachite on the brownish matrix is appealing, however.  Condition there are a few rubs towards the top of the specimen, I took a photo of these (far right) so these could be evaluated to their extent.  In my mind they do detract a little from the specimen but not a significant amount.

#CONGO 12 - Malachite on Chrysocolla on matrix - Democratic Republic of Congo

11.5 x 5.5 x 3 cm (4.5 x 2.15 x 1.2 inches) - $25.00 on hold

A specimen interesting from a scientific viewpoint.  The first growth on this specimen was chrysocolla, evidenced by the bluish/white area in the right photo, but then a layer of malachite grew on top of the chrysocolla.  This is rather typical of specimens from the Congo and shows how the successive growths occur.  Nice banding along the edge towards the matrix as well with earlier growths.

#CONGO 18 - Malachite - Democratic Republic of Congo

21 x 11 x 3 cm (8.2 x 4.3 x 1.2 inches) - $60.00

Nice typical large cabinet example of bubbly malachite from Congo.  Most of the individual bubbles (far right photo) are 5-10mm across, and only a few are rubbed or nicked, these show the chrysocolla underneath.  Good large cabinet specimen of this variety.

#CONGO 23 - Malachite in vug - Democratic Republic of Congo

11 x 12 cm, goes back about 10 cm (4.3 x 4.7 inches, back 3.9 inches) - $45.00 on hold

A very nice open malachite-lined vug makes up much of this specimen.  The malachite has a drusy coating in many places, further adding to the overall presentation of this specimen.  Sits up perfectly for display with no assistance required.

#CONGO 24 - Malachite and Chrysocolla - Democratic Republic of Congo

16 x 12 cm (6.2 x 4.7 inches) - $55.00 on hold

A "plate-like" specimen of malachite overgrowing chrysocolla is the best description for this specimen.  There is some relief in the middle of the specimen, the middle photo shows the specimen from the back view while the left photo shows how the specimen will most likely be displayed.  Excellent condition.

#CONGO 38 - Chrysocolla - Democratic Republic of Congo

16.5 x 7.5 x 2.5 cm (6.5 x 3 x 1 inches) - $35.00 sold

Colorful specimen of chrysocolla.  There is evidence of mutiple growths of malachite/chrysocolla and on this specimen chryscolla happened to be the last growth, thus the rich blue color (the color in the photographs is a touch brighter than the specimen appears in person but not far off.  A little area of contact at the right side confirms multiple growth stages, otherwise just a few miniscule rubs or nicks here and there, typical of the specimens from this area.

#CONGO 39 - Malachite - Democratic Republic of Congo

11 x 9 x 2 cm (4.3 x 3.5 x 0.8 inches) - $30.00

Typical specimen of slightly bubbly malachite with a little but not much relief.  A few minor rubs here and there, the most significant as seen in the photos (middle photo just right of center is the most notable).

#CONGO 40 - Malachite - Democratic Republic of Congo

13 x 10 x 2 cm (5.1 x 3.9 x 0.8 inches) - $35.00

Sparkling specimen of drusy malachite on host matrix.  One little rub toward the middle of the specimen - this is seen in the middle photograph just left of bottom center.  Nice hand sized specimen.

#CONGO 41 - Malachite - Democratic Republic of Congo

13.5 x 10 x 3.5 cm (5.3 x 3.9 x 1.4 inches) - $25.00

An open vug in host rock is host to small botryoidal and also fibrous malachite.  Just miniscule rubs here and there - nice malachite reference specimen from the Congo.

#CONGO 42 - Chrysocolla and Malachite - Democratic Republic of Congo

16 x 8.5 x 2.5 cm (6.3 x 3.35 x 1 inches ) - $40.00 on hold

Very colorful specimen from the Congo!  The majority of the specimen is chrysocolla but in a few areas the chrysocolla has rubbed or contacted away, exposing previous growths of malachite.  The chrysocolla is slightly darker in person but the photographs are pretty close.  Nice specimen from the Congo!
