Minerals of Bulgaria

For centuries, mining has taken place in several districts in Bulgaria, notably in the southern and southwestern portions of the country.  Throughout the course of mining, several important mineral specimen finds have occurred.  Up until the break-up of the USSR, specimens from this country were largely absent from collections outside Europe.  After the demise of the USSR, however, specimens began to come to the United States and other countries outside of Europe.  A large list of minerals found in Bulgaria's mines has been composed, but the most popular/frequently seen minerals include galena, sphalerite, quartz, calcite, rhodochrosite, stilbite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite, among many others.  Some have argued that the finest galenas known to exist have been found in Bulgaria.  Below we offer a varied selection of Bulgarian specimens from thumbnails to large cabinet sizes.

Most of the specimens below were recently purchased from a collection recently released in Bulgaria.  This collection featured a wide array of specimens in all sizes and varieties, including some very unique and not-often-seen specimen types in high quality, and some recently-mined specimens.  We will continue to update this page with additional specimens from the collection and future collections we will receive.  If you have any specific requests, please contact us and we will see if we have something available that may fit your request.
